Anodising is an electrolytic process applied to aluminium alloys to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer and thereby increasing the resistance to wear and corrosion.
Anodised aluminium is a harder surface than aluminium and its wear properties improve with thicker layers, but due to increasing porosity the surface corrosion resistance requires a sealing process.
Anodising can also be for cosmetic appearance by absorbing coloured dyes into the porous surface prior to sealing.

This immersion, non-electrolytic process is used as a corrosion inhibitor, paint primer, decorative finish and also to retain electrical conductivity.
